What are Early Childhood Intervention Programs?

Early Childhood Intervention Programs (ECIP’s) are divisions of province-wide networks of community based supports for families of children who experience developmental delays. ECIP Interventionists utilize a strength-based approach to deliver family-focused, home and center based services to families.

ECIP Interventionists build trusting relationships with families and assists them in working towards mutually identified goals.

Our Early Childhood Intervention Program (ECIP)

Our Holy Family Early Childhood Intervention Program (ECIP) focuses on engaging and providing interventions and support to children (birth to 5 years old) who are experiencing delays in their development. Delays may be demonstrated in any of the following areas:

  • Language
  • Motor Skills
  • Socialization
  • Behavior
  • Cognitive
Reaching appropriate developmental milestones is an indicator of school success. When a child is not reaching these milestones independently, intervention can increase success and therefore better prepare the child for school achievement.

Examples of Delayed Development

Examples of delays children may experience could include, but are not limited to:

Physical Delays - difficulties associated with crawling, walking, eating, fine motor skills.
Language Delays - difficulties associated with speech and language-limited or infrequent use of speech, caregivers having difficulty understanding child’s speech.
Developmental Delays - children diagnosed or experiencing symptoms of an early childhood developmental disorder.
Social and Emotional Delays - difficulties associated with playing and interacting with others and emotional regulation.

  • Use Play-based interventions to help children learn new skills.
  • Assist with routines and school transitions.
  • Provide consultation with Community
“During the first six year of life, a child’s brain develops dramatically. Research shows that during those years, children are developing socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. That is why a good start in life-days full of caring, sharing , kindness and creativity-will set the foundation for future success and happiness, in school and throughout life“
Early Childhood Intervention Program (ECIP) services are offered in 14 regions across the province. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Education funds ECIP to provide specialized services to families of young children between birth and school entry who are either at risk for, have a diagnosis of, or exhibit developmental delay.

EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM CORE SERVICES

An individual Family Service Plan is developed in collaboration with each family. Consultation, information, support and services designed to meet the individual needs of each child and family are delivered in the child’s home and may extend to community based programs.
ECIP services build family capacity by providing participatory caregiver experiences and opportunities that supplement the parenting knowledge and skills required to parent a child with a delay, and promote a positive sense of parenting competence and confidence. At the heart of this family‐centered process is the recognition that families can identify their own concerns, resources and priorities. ECIP staff work to support the family in their natural caregiving and decision‐making roles, ensuring they have the information and resources they need to be successful advocates and strong supports for their child and family. Toy and Resource Lending Libraries augment the resources of families.
